Trump Says NY Times Report He’s Considering Jim Webb For Defense Sec. is ‘Fake News’

President Donald Trump lashed out at a report that he’s considering former Democratic Senator Jim Webb for defense secretary, calling it “FAKE NEWS.”

“The story in the New York Times regarding Jim Webb being considered as the next Secretary of Defense is FAKE NEWS,” Trump wrote on Twitter Friday. “I’m sure he is a fine man, but I don’t know Jim, and never met him. Patrick Shanahan, who is Acting Secretary of Defense, is doing a great job!”

Trump is on the hunt for a new secretary of defense after James Mattis resigned last month, over the president’s abrupt decisions to withdraw troops from Syria and Afghanistan.

Maggie Haberman and Thomas Gibbons-Neff of the Times reported Thursday that Webb — who before serving as a senator worked as secretary of the Navy under Reagan — was being considered for the Trump administration position.
