Turkish President Erdogan: Coup Organizers ‘Will Pay a Heavy Price for Their Treason’

erdoganAfter speaking to the country via FaceTime and flying around, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan returned to the Ataturk airport to deliver more comments on the attempted military coup.

Government officials said earlier in the night the coup has ended and they are getting things under control, even amid reports of explosions at the Parliamentary building.

According to The New York Times, Erdogan made the following remarks:

“A minority within the Armed Forces has unfortunately been unable to stomach Turkey’s unity,” Mr. Erdogan said, adding that individuals loyal to Mr. Gulen had “penetrated the Armed Forces and the police, among other government agencies, over the past 40 years.”

“What is being perpetrated is a rebellion and a treason,” Mr. Erdogan said. “They will pay a heavy price for their treason to Turkey.”

The White House issued a statement supporting the democratically-elected government and calling for calm.
