In China, two people died and three more were injured after making an attempt to retrieve a woman’s cell phone from the toilet it had fallen into. This woman had gone to an open-pit toilet and accidentally dropped her brand-new cell phone (worth 2000 yuan, about $320) in the cesspit. And so, her husband decided to go after it.
He jumped in, but was unable to breathe after a while and lost consciousness. So his mother jumped in to try and save him, but she lost consciousness too. Three neighbors attempted to help them, but were unsuccessful and also lost consciousness.
Eventually, all of them were pulled out of the cesspit and the husband and mother-in-law were rushed to the hospital (though it reportedly took a while for the ambulance to arrive). Both of them died in the hospital, due to suffocation, while the others were only injured.
Someone took a picture of the scene of the horrible tragedy.
