A Utah police officer has been placed on leave after refusing to be on patrol for a gay pride event in Salt Lake City for what’s being described as “personal reasons” that organizers of the event believe to be his bigoted views about gay individuals.
There is an investigation into this officer already, and a Salt Lake City police spokesperson explained, “The vast majority of officers understand: when they put the badge on and come to work, they leave their beliefs at home.”
There was still a police presence at the gay pride parade, and the police also set up an “outreach and recruitment booth” during the festivities. Local gay rights activists praised the swift action of the police department in disciplining the officer.
