VA Secretary Apologizes for Falsely Claiming He Served in Special Forces
Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald is apologizing tonight for falsely claiming weeks ago that he served in the special forces. During a CBS News report last month on homeless veterans, McDonald spoke with a homeless veteran on camera and asked where he served.
When the veteran told McDonald he was in the special forces, McDonald responded, “Special forces? What years? I was in special forces!”
Except he wasn’t. The Huffington Post did some digging and reported that while McDonald did serve, he did not do so in any special operations unit.
McDonald released a statement tonight apologizing for his error:
While I was in Los Angeles, engaging a homeless individual to determine his Veteran status, I asked the man where he had served in the military. He responded that he had served in special forces. I incorrectly stated that I had been in special forces. That was inaccurate and I apologize to anyone that was offended by my misstatement.
