Virginia Gov. Wants to Put a Stop to Confederate Flag License Plates

confederate flagLots of South Carolina legislators standing unified to call for the Confederate flag at the state capitol to be taken down opened the floodgates for lots of other people, businesses, and states to question their tacit endorsement of the flag.

Well, you can add Virginia to the list, because Governor Terry McAuliffe wants to put an end to state-sponsored Confederate flag license plates.

According to The Washington Post, McAuliffe said, “Although the battle flag is not flown here on Capitol Square, it has been the subject of considerable controversy, and it divides many of our people. Even its display on state-issued license tags is, in my view, unnecessarily divisive and hurtful to too many of our people.”

All license plates currently on the road with the symbol on them will be replaced. There will still be plates to recognize Sons of Confederate Veterans, just not with the Confederate emblem.

It just so happens that last week, the Supreme Court issued a ruling last week saying that license plates are government speech, and therefore it’s within the government’s purview to reject license plate designs with the Confederate flag on it.
