Brian Williams had a poetic take on Thursday’s airstrikes against a Syrian airbase, calling Pentagon footage showing the launch of Tomahawk missiles into Syria “beautiful.” He even quoted Leonard Cohen.
“We see these beautiful pictures at night from the decks of these two U.S. Navy vessels in the eastern Mediterranean,” said Williams “I am tempted to quote the great Leonard Cohen: ‘I am guided by the beauty of our weapons.’”
… uhhh, right?
Williams made the whimsical remarks during MSNBC’s coverage late Thursday evening on his show, The 11th Hour.
“They are beautiful pictures of fearsome armaments making what is for them what is a brief flight over to this airfield,” Williams waxed. “What did they hit?”
The comments recall the oft-repeated media narrative that journalists love a good war, which has prevailed since the much televised Gulf War of 1991.
For the record, Williams was quoting Cohen’s song, First We Take Manhattan, which you can listen to here.
