The St. Louis Cardinals were officially eliminated from the National League Central Division race with a series-opening loss to the Chicago Cubs on Monday. But this was not the biggest tragedy to occur in Busch Stadium during the evening. Instead, it was this:
Andrew Gudermuth lost his nachos.
Gudermuth — a Cardinals fan — was seated down the left field line. In the bottom of the second, Cubs shortstop Addison Russell dove into the stands to try to catch a foul ball. But Gudermuth’s nachos didn’t survive. Much of the cheese ended up on Russel’s arm.
A visibly heartbroken Gudermuth was interviewed about his fallen nachos, and an internet meme was born:
Alas, this story has a happy ending. Russell later emerged from the Cubs clubhouse with a fresh plate of nachos — which he personally delivered to Gudermuth. The fans down the left field line cheered for the rival player as he rescued Andrew Gudermuth’s snack.
Gudermuth and Russell posed for a quick selfie and the game continued. And — for a moment — all was right with the world.
