WATCH: Czech President Lit Giant Red Underwear on Fire in a Bold Political Stunt Because…It’s Hard to Say
My word, everything has been so serious today. Let’s take a little break and check out this weirdness together.
Milos Zeman, president of the Czech Republic, called for a surprise press conference yesterday, and journalists attended without having any idea what it was going to be all about. When everyone gathered at Prague Castle, chancellor Vratislav Mynar brought out a humungous pair of red boxer shorts, and then Zeman had two firemen set the undergarments ablaze in front of the assembly.
“I’m sorry to make you look like little idiots,” Zeman told reporters. “You really don’t deserve it.”
Confused? I don’t blame you.
According to NPR, the stunt was a reference to the art collective Ztohoven, which flew a similar pair of underwear from the flagpole of Prague Castle in 2015. The act was meant to protest Zeman’s anti-immigration rhetoric and friendliness with Russia and China, and Ztohoven has been vocally criticizing his presidency ever since he was narrowly re-elected this year.
While this might be Zeman’s way of getting back at his critics, his political opposition did not find his stunt all that amusing.
“Awaken me from this nightmare!” tweeted Jiří Pospíšil of the European Parliament.
