Israel made significant strikes Monday night in its four-week long battle against Hamas, hitting Gaza’s only power plant and striking TV studios in a media center. The power plant is the only source of electricity within Gaza’s borders, and the strike threatens to leave much of the Gaza Strip without power. The several TV stations based in the media center began broadcasting from other locations.
The power plant and TV studio were part of seventy-six overnight strikes, one of the biggest volley since Operation Protective Edge began four weeks ago. The house of a Hamas leader was also hit (he was not home), as were several mosques believed to be holding Hamas weapons.
The increased level of attacks were a response to a day in which Israel lost ten soldiers in separate Hamas attacks. Israel has now lost fifty-three soldiers in the fighting, while the Palestinian death toll climbed above 1,100.
