In June, the deadliest mass shooting in American history was carried out at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The nightclub was among the most popular destinations for the LGBT community in the region, so tributes and memorials have focused largely on that group.
Today, Ellen DeGeneres posted a video of what happened when Tony Marrero did just that and it’s already gotten almost 100,000 views. After she asked him how Katy Perry‘s Olympic jam, “Rise,” helped him through his recovery, she surprised him with a visitor.
“Your lyrics from that song helped me from when I was in the hospital all the way until now,” Merrero told a crying Perry after she popped out and surprised him.
She told him she was happy to have been there “in [her] own little way,” to help him. Then, she helped him in her own big way by pledging to pay for his first year of film school.
Watch above. Keep a napkin up your sleeve like Perry did, just in case.
