WATCH: Obama Speaks on Syrian Airstrikes
President Barack Obama will speak Tuesday morning on last night’s air strikes in Syria, which represent a marked escalation of military operations against ISIS.
The U.S. struck a number of ISIS and al Qaeda targets along the Syrian/Iraqi border, territory over which ISIS has gained control in the past few months since emerging from the Syrian civil war. Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan and Qatar joined in the campaign (though Qatar didn’t appear to actually do anything).
Aside from the scope of future operations, Obama will likely face questions over everything from the lack of European allies to the legality of performing the strikes without permission from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to the possibility that the air strikes will function as a recruiting tool for ISIS or other Islamic militant groups.
