President Donald Trump is hosting a roundtable discussion on sanctuary cities this afternoon. The meeting will include Vice President Mike Pence, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, White House senior advisor Stephen Miller, several Republican lawmakers and members of the law enforcement community.
This public discussion is taking place as the Trump administration is making a concerted effort to take aim at sanctuary cities and local and state laws that provide certain protections to undocumented immigrants. Recently, the Department of Justice sued the state of California over its sanctuary city laws. That lawsuit came after the Oakland mayor warned residents of an upcoming ICE raid, which obviously infuriated immigration hawk Sessions, leading to the suit.
Trump recently lashed out against sanctuary cities during a speech oh the opioid crisis in New Hampshire on Monday. During his remarks, the president tied sanctuary city laws and illegal immigration to drug addiction, blaming the cities for releasing drug dealers and gang members from custody.
The White House roundtable is scheduled to start at 2:15 PM ET.
