President Donald Trump will deliver a speech from the White House today where he will be expected to lay out his plan for reducing prescription drug costs. The address is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
Officials have told the media that Trump will most likely speak about ways to increase market competition, reshape Medicare and create incentives for affordable pricing in the pharmaceutical industry. Trump is known for being critical of drug companies and foreign governments who pay less for prescription drugs, so it’s possible he will outline a major overhaul of current health system.
Trump has already moved away from what he said in 2016 about allowing older Americans on Medicare to directly negotiate prices with drug companies. Instead, it seems the government will launch several reforms that would supposedly reduce costs while dissuading doctors from prescribing expensive medicines.
It isn’t clear whether Trump will take questions at any point for this event, but if he does, he’s likely to be asked about the big moves his administration made this week with regards to Iran and North Korea. It’s also possible he could be asked about Michael Cohen‘s lobbying work, the U.S. Embassy’s opening in Jerusalem, and the White House aide who made widely denounced comments about Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
