Today’s press conference has been cancelled, as President Donald Trump has requested the presence of the White House press pool as he meets with bipartisan lawmakers to discuss possible solutions to ending gun violence in our nation’s schools. This discussion begins at 3 p.m. EST.
While we won’t get to see Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders trade barbs with the beleaguered press crops, we will, hopefully, get to see a rare moment in how “the sausage gets made,” akin to Trump’s filmed meeting with lawmakers as they discussed immigration reform.
The conversation is also slated to include “community safety,” which may mean the president plans to segue from topics such as gun control to tangentially related topics, like gang violence or acts of violence conducted by illegal immigrants. One can never tell.
Among the participants: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL,) Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL,) Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-FL) and Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL.) Though, it must be noted, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) has not been invited to attend. Strange, considering he also represents the state where the tragedy occurred.
In any event, here is to hoping our lawmakers have a fruitful discussion which, in turn, leads to legislation to ensure something like the Parkland massacre never happens again in this country.
