This is absolutely bonkers.
In the video above (via Guardian editor James Dart, and a Netherlands-based website called Casual Ultra), you can see fans of Russian soccer club Spartak Moscow getting absolutely crazy in the stands during a Champions League match — as lit flares were omnipresent in one section..
One of the flares was chucked on to the field, and directly at the referee — identified by Dart as Deniz Ayetkin. Fortunately, Ayetkin, and several nearby players avoided the flare. Just a crazy scene.
We’ve previously posted about flares being fired in the stands of basketball games and other soccer matches in Europe. But this incident takes the fan unruliness to a whole new level. The referee and players could have been seriously hurt.
