WH Spox: Trump Was Totally Being ‘Tongue in Cheek’ About the Whole Calling Dems ‘Treasonous’ Thing
Hey, you know the whole President Donald Trump calling Democrats “treasonous” for not applauding him during his State of the Union address? Yeah…apparently POTUS was so totally kidding.
That’s the message, at least, from White House Deputy Spokesperson Hogan Gidley. Speaking with NBC News, Gidley said that Trump’s comment — made during a speech in Ohio on Monday — was “tongue in cheek.”
From the NBC News report:
The president, Gidley said, was simply trying to make the point that there are positive things going on that all Americans should celebrate regardless of their party.
Trump casually threw the “treasonous” word out there during his Monday remarks, as he reflected on Democrats being — in his view — “very selfish” by not applauding him at various points during the State of the Union.
“They were like Death and Un-American. Un-American. Somebody said ‘treasonous.’ I mean, yeah, I guess, why not? Can we call that treason? Why not. I mean, they certainly didn’t seem to love our country very much. But you look at that and it’s really very, very sad.”
But the official word from the White House on Tuesday is apparently, ‘Hey, just kidding, lol!’
