During his broadcast last night, Fox News host Sean Hannity unironically compared the current investigation into Russian election interference and possible collusion with Trump associates to birtherism. Of course, what makes the whole comparison ironic is the fact that President Donald Trump for years pushed the theory that Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States, only backtracking towards the end of his election campaign.
In response to the pro-Trump host’s remarks, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews ridiculed Hannity for likening the current probe to a conspiracy that the president believed in for years.
“What a hoot,” Matthews exclaimed after playing a series of Fox News clips. “Did you just hear Hannity? He just compared it to birtherism. In other words, nonsense!”
The MSNBC host continued, “Doesn’t he know that was Trump’s birtherism? Doesn’t Hannity keep a file cabinet — this is Trump’s crap. This isn’t somebody else’s. It’s amazing.”
MSNBC analyst Jeremy Bash went on to point out that the Russia probe isn’t a “Democratic hoax” but instead multiple “professional investigations” into serious allegations.
