White House Correspondents’ Dinner emcee and The Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore‘s followup to President Obama‘s remarks got him flipped off by Don Lemon and earned him a death stare from Wolf Blitzer, but he really ignited controversy with his parting remark to President Obama: “Yo, Barry, you did it, my nigga.”
At Monday’s White House daily briefing, American Urban Radio Network‘s April Ryan confronted Press Secretary Josh Earnest at length over the remark, and while Earnest offered several general defenses of Wilmore and the tough task of following President Obama on that dais, he also said that he had spoken directly with President Obama about Wilmore’s routine, and that the President “appreciated the spirit” of Wilmore’s routine:
He said that he appreciated the spirit of the sentiments that Mr. Wilmore expressed. He ended his speech by saying that he couldn’t put into words the pride that he felt in the President.
April Ryan is among several prominent black media figures who have expressed displeasure at Wilmore’s dismount, while many others have defended the bit, or at the very least expressed a desire not to hear about it from white people.
