White House Denies Obama Planning Visit to Iran

A Kuwaiti news outlet reported on Monday that President Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani were in the process of ironing out the details of an official American presidential visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran. “Al-Jarida has learned from a U.S. diplomat that President Barack Obama is seeking to visit Tehran in the middle of next year,” the report read. On Monday, the White House denied that such a trip was in the works.

The Kuwaiti report, translated into English by The Weekly Standard, indicated that the framework of a nuclear deal that both the United States and Iran agreed to in November was the prelude to an opening of Iran to the West.

“There is no truth to this report,” National Security Council spokesperson Caitlin Hayden said when asked to respond to the report.
