Whoopi Goldberg Talks Kanye: ‘You Have to’ Separate the Art from the Artist, ‘I Can’t Judge Anybody’s Craziness’

The View host Whoopi Goldberg met up with Complex to discuss and shop for sneakers at Stadium Goods, an iconic street wear store in New York City.

Complex host Joe La Puma, who typically has on pro athletes and rappers to talk sneaker culture, asked for Goldberg’s opinion on critics of rapper Kanye West who have condemned his Yeezy shoe line due to his support for President Donald Trump.

“Yeah, you have to,” Goldberg said when asked if one can separate art from an artist.

“People who create stuff, sometimes are out there. I just feel like I can’t judge anybody’s craziness, I have my own,” she added. “Is what he’s creating worthwhile, does it last, is it beyond just the name value?”

West has distanced himself from the conservative movement since initially becoming vocally supportive of the president in recent months. In several tweets posted late last month, the rapper and designer said he felt he had been used by the pro-Trump movement and announced he is taking a step back from politics.

While discussing singer Frank Ocean’s visit to the White House in Vans, Goldberg took a shot at the current president.

“[Ocean] gets to be whoever he is when he goes, that’s who he is,” she said. “That’s the beauty of being an American and going to the White House, or at least it was.”

As for her love of sneakers, Goldberg said she primarily enjoys their comfort.

“I can do the heel thing forever, but if I can wear a pair of sneakers I’m happier,” she said, before later applauding the fact that “they’re being accepted as footwear for anytime, and I just love that.”
