Whoopi Goldberg‘s been a busy bee lately. On top of her hosting duties on The View and launching a marijuana-based product for women, she’s now taking the role of executive producer in a new Oxygen Media reality show about transgender people.
Strut is expected to focus on transgender models as they try to make it in the fashion industry and challenge stereotypes about gender and beauty. The show’s subjects are all affiliated with Slay Model Management, the world’s first exclusive agency for transgender models.
“For all of the positive advances the community has made and continues to make, transgender is still a hot-button word that gets people hysterical,” said Goldberg in a statement. “People tend to focus on the stereotype instead of the person, and this series will give viewers a unique opportunity to spend time with real people who are struggling with the same challenges we all face as we make our way through the world.”
Despite shows like Transparent and Caitlyn Jenner‘s I Am Cait series, transgenderism remains a touchy subject among many in America. This can be prominently seen as North Carolina continues to observe fallout from their state law — HB2 — declaring that people must use the restrooms that match the gender they were assigned on their birth certificate, not that which corresponds to the gender they identify with necessarily.
