‘You Know What Pussy Means in English?’ Czech President’s Swearing Draws Outrage

Czech President Milos Zeman came under fire this week for swearing in a radio interview as he was talking about Pussy Riot, the rock group that got international recognition for being jailed by the Russian government. Multiple reports on Zeman’s interview say he got a bit too profane in the interview.

For example, Zeman said “shit” and “fucked up” and even asked “you know what pussy in English?” right before dropping what’s described as a more offensive Czech version of that word.

Those remarks got quite a lot of attention in the Czech press. Now, that might sound overblown, but just imagine how Americans would react if President Obama dropped the f-bomb in public. (Well, there was that one Biden thing…)

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka spoke out strongly in condemning Zeman’s profanities, saying, “The president should not speak in such a way as it damages the reputation of the presidency, sets a bad example and does nothing for our reputation abroad.”

And Zeman has since spoke out in defense of what he said:

“I see absolutely no reason to apologise for what I said,” the president told the newspaper Dnes, adding that “only a hypocrite opposes the use of swear words”…

“Quoting the swear words was not being vulgar, but highlighting the vulgarity of others,” he said. “As you know, I don’t normally use profanities.”
