2020 Candidate Tulsi Gabbard Once Worked For Anti-LGBT Group, Railed Against ‘Homosexual Extremists’

According to a new report by CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard — who just announced her intentions to run for president in 2020 — once touted her work for an anti-LGBT organization and railed against “homosexual extremists.”

Gabbard’s prior comments are in sharp contrast to her more recent record in support of LGBT rights and seem to stem to work she did with her father.

Gabbard’s father, Mike, was an anti-LGBT activist in Hawaii and ran a political action group that promoted traditional marriage. Rep. Gabbard is even quoted in one of the press releases.

Kaczynski reports:

Gabbard herself is quoted in a 2000 press release from The Alliance for Traditional Marriage. In it, she attacks gay rights activists who were opposed to her mother Carol’s bid for the state’s board of education.

“This war of deception and hatred against my mom is being waged by homosexual activists because they know, that if elected, she will not allow them to force their values down the throats of the children in our schools,” Gabbard is quoted as saying.

He also noted that in 2004, Gabbard even called same-sex marriage “dishonest” and “extremely disrespectful” to the people from her home state.

“To try to act as if there is a difference between ‘civil unions’ and same-sex marriage is dishonest, cowardly and extremely disrespectful to the people of Hawaii,” Gabbard said at a hearing opposing civil unions back then. “As Democrats we should be representing the views of the people, not a small number of homosexual extremists.”

Speaking on CNN on Sunday, Kaczynski also stressed that despite her past, Gabbard has since apologized and has moved to back LGBT rights.

That change reportedly came after she served in the military.

“So when she ran for Congress in 2012, she apologized to LGBT activists in the state of Hawaii, and in Congress since she got elected and started serving in 2013, she’s actually had a record that has been — she’s backed most LGBT legislation and she’s been very supportive of gay rights,” he said.

The KFILE senior editor also stressed that Gabbard’s office pointed to her record when asked for a comment about the story, but have not yet made a comment about the report.
