Holocaust Survivor Tells Fox News ‘Shocking’ Campus Protests Like a ‘Virus’: ‘If You Don’t Stop It Early, It Kills the Body’
Holocaust survivor and author Tova Friedman told Fox News on Tuesday that growing campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war could end up ending in tragedy if something is not done soon.
Columbia University shifted to hybrid learning this week after days of Pro-Palestinian activists demonstrating. It’s one of a number of protests on college campuses as Israel’s strikes on Gaza continue. More than 100 were arrested, including the daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), at the Columbia protest after students were given multiple warnings about an encampment.
The Anti-Defamation League said reports of antisemitism are surging amid the demonstrations and some activists’ calls of support for Hamas, the terror group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing more than 1,000 and kidnapping hundreds more. Israel has since vowed that Gaza strikes will not stop until Hamas is eliminated. Those strikes have led to thousands of civilian deaths.
The White House condemned the Columbia protest this week, calling it “blatantly Antisemitic, unconscionable, and dangerous.”
Friedman, who has gained over half a million followers with her TikTok videos, joined Fox & Friends on Tuesday and called the scenes out of recent protests “shocking.”
“It is shocking! It is utterly shocking! You know, when I walked out of Auschwitz with my mother, walking through these gates, and I thought — I was six and a half, and I was a very adult six and a half, not like a child, you know? And I said I will never, never have anybody call me a dirty Jew or anything else again. I am free now,” she said.
Friedman came to the United States when she was 11, describing the country as the “promised land.” She said she’s now “scared” for the country’s future, noting she has two grandchildren in college and they are both scared.
She predicted “tragedy” if the “hatred” continues to grow.
“I just want to say that if this isn’t contained and if they don’t think about it, what is going to be the end product?” she said. “What is the end product of any hatred and prejudice? It is death to somebody. Could be death to themselves. Death to their opponents. Because we didn’t stop Hitler.”
She continued by referring to some of the protests she’s seen as a “virus.”
“That type of behavior and anger and hatred can only end up in tragedy. Tragedy for everybody. Not only tragedy for the Jews, God forbid, tragedy for themselves, which is — it’s going to be a terrible clash. We have to find a way to stop it. I think of it as a virus or like a cancer,” she said. “If you don’t stop it early, it kills the body.”
