Ocasio-Cortez Speaks Out on Border Tensions: Applying for Refugee Status ‘Isn’t a Crime’

On Sunday, incoming Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) issued a tweet stressing that applying for refugee status “isn’t a crime.”

“Asking to be considered a refugee & applying for status isn’t a crime,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted out.

She then compared the situation of the migrants of the border to Jews fleeing Germany and families targeted in Rwanda.

She wrote:

It wasn’t for Jewish families fleeing Germany.
It wasn’t for targeted families fleeing Rwanda.
It wasn’t for communities fleeing war-torn Syria.
And it isn’t for those fleeing violence in Central America

Ocasio-Cortez’s tweet appears to be a response to reports of tear gas being deployed at the US border on Sunday. She also quoted an NBC News report showing a fleeing migrant family in the same tweet.

The tear gas was reportedly fired by US border agents after some migrants tried to breach the border wall. The breeze carried the tear gas forcing mothers and children — also in the crowd — to run.

The border was closed for part of Sunday but has now been reopened to pedestrian traffic.

Mexico reportedly is planning to deport those involved in storming the border.
