Amid the chaos surrounding Donald Trump‘s shutdown showdown over funding for his border (or “boarder”) wall, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders inadvertently admitted that Trump is willing to break his campaign promise in order to avoid a shutdown.
After outgoing Speaker of the House Paul Ryan canceled a scheduled press conference following a call with Trump, Sanders released the following statement (pool report via email from The White House):
Update on Government Funding:
“The President is having a meeting with Republican House Members at noon today. At this moment, the President does not want to go further without border security, which includes steel slats or a wall. The President is continuing to weigh his options.” Sarah Sanders
The chances that Trump and the Republicans can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat are practically nil, if outlets like Fox News are to be believed, but Sanders’ statement is an explicit acknowledgement that after years of promising a wall — “not a fence” — the thing that Trump is promising now is not a wall.
If Trump is now demanding “steel slats or a wall,” then steel slats are not a wall, contrary to Trump’s claim that his “artistically designed steel slats” are a wall. Before this is all over, American taxpayers might end up funding a pile of Pink Floyd albums at the border.
