Vice President Mike Pence, who always seems to disappear when the crap hits the fan, conducted an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt, to be aired tonight, while he was visiting South Korea for the Winter Olympics.
On Holt’s mind? The shocking resignation of White House aide Rob Porter, amid allegations of spousal abuse, and how President Donald Trump and his administration have handled it.
Pence expressed grief over the incident, noting that he did not hear of it until Porter’s resignation, thus distancing himself from Chief of Staff John Kelly and other members of the administration.
“I was appalled when I learned of the allegations,” he said. “The time that he resigned is when I first became aware of the allegations of domestic abuse.”
Of note, Pence seemed to double down on a sentiment expressed by deputy press secretary Raj Shah, in which he told reporters “It’s fair to say we all could have done better dealing with this over the last few days.” That sentence is one that is alleged to have stuck in Trump’s mind, filling him with frustration, so interesting that Pence would repeat it.
“I think the White House has acknowledged that they could have handled it better,” he said. “When I return to Washington D.C., I’m going to look into the matter and I’ll share my counsel with the president directly.”
