The NY Post Outdoes Itself With Cover Featuring Gen. Petraeus As Austin Powers

The shocking resignation of General David Petraeus as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, ostensibly due to an extra-marital affair, has thus far been handled with admirable discretion by most in the media, out of respect for Gen. Petraeus’ long service to this country in times of war, and due to the intensely personal nature of the scandal. Old reliable Rupert Murdoch-owned The New York Post, however, has put on a solo clinic in one-upmanship with a series of characteristically crass Petraeus-related covers, culminating in Sunday’s Austin Powers-themed tabloid tableau:


That cover follows a Saturday cover that also featured a Powers-themed headline:


Classic Saturday Night Live alum Tim Kazurinsky used to do a hilarious Weekend Update bit consisting of little more than reading The Post‘s hilariously classless covers, but the paper may have become a victim of its own formula. New York Magazine’s Dan Amira successfully predicted the Post’s angle among a raft of suggestions for the paper, which did not include “Rock Me, Dave Petraeus,” “The Spy Who Came In and Out and In and Out From The Cold,” or “The Surge Is Working.”
