Matt Taibbi Leaves Rolling Stone to Start Own Publication for First Look Media
Last night, the New York Times broke the news that Rolling Stone reporter Matt Taibbi, known widely for his coverage of the financial recession, is leaving the magazine to start his own publication at First Look Media — the same media group where Glenn Greenwald has made his new home.
The well-funded news startup (we’re talking about $250 million from eBay founder Pierre Omidyar) will soon be home to Taibbi’s unnamed blog, which will focus on political and financial corruption. Judging from the journalists Omidyar’s already brought on — Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and Jeremy Scahill currently run a national security page called The Intercept — First Look Media might be evolving into a juggernaut of adversarial-style journalism.
In a statement to the Times, Taibbi said that the site would be based in New York and launch this year, though, as of now, he hasn’t made any hires.
“It’s obvious that we’re entering a new phase in the history of journalism,” Mr. Taibbi said. “This is clearly the future, and this was an opportunity for me to be part of helping to found something and create something that might carry us into the next generation.”
