Politico’s Mike Allen got a major scoop on this year’s Pulitzer Prizes after one of the winners bragged about it at a beer pong party.
“Washington Post national reporter Wesley Lowery jubilantly told friends at a party this weekend that he and a Post team (or perhaps the paper institutionally) will win a Pulitzer Prize today; he worked on the team project “Fatal Force,” about deadly police shootings,” Allen reported in the widely-read Politico Playbook, adding that Lowery also said The New York Times won a Pulitzer.
The winners of the Pulitzer Prize are typically shrouded in secrecy until their announcement. Every year inevitably sees a few leaks, as winners are typically given a heads-up so they craft a statement and plan a celebration.
The Washingtonian revealed the most important details of the story, however: “The party in question was held Saturday night at the Shaw house of Daily Beast deputy social media editor Asawin Suebsaeng… The party was called “The Dance-Party & Beer Bong ‘Make America Bae Again’ #YOLOmageddon (2016).”
