UPDATE: Football is not coming home. Return to your flats in an orderly fashion, hooligans.
Alright lads, strap into your VW Polos, drive down to the local pisser, order a round of Carlsberg Special Brews and locate the least moist pub booth you can: it’s the World Cup semi-final showdown between England and Croatia.
Croatia isn’t the biggest name in international football, but its squad, boasting Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic, is a force to be reckoned with this World Cup.
But! Football is coming home.
That means it’s England’s year. The Three Lions haven’t won a World Cup since 1966, and their attempts since have been farcical. The 2010s are the years of living ironically, however, and a new meme has sprouted out of England’s above-average showing at this World Cup.
Jamie Vardy is an absolute nutter. Harry Kane has been mashing in goals. Jesse Lingard keeps the football liquid. And Gary Southgate, the team’s manager, has been coolly running things from the sidelines with the sartorial flair of a Becks. If England beats Croatia and then France in the finals, knight the man on Sunday.
In anticipation of England pulling off the unthinkable, here are the best “It’s Coming Home” memes:
