Ben Carson Rescued From Stuck Elevator on Way to Meeting with Alonzo Mourning

On Wednesday morning, Miami Herald reporter Rene Rodriguez had a bit of an interesting assignment: Cover Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson’s meeting with NBA great Alonzo Mourning at Courtside Family Apartments, a local affordable housing project. Mourning’s nonprofit organization, AM Affordable Housing, developed the complex, and the retired athlete was set to speak to Carson as part of the latter’s “listening tour.”

Mourning was late, so Carson checked out the building’s recreation room and roof without him. When Mourning arrived, Carson stepped into the elevator to head back downstairs for their meeting. Then, according to the article Rodriguez filed later, he got stuck when the doors wouldn’t open.

It took a good 20 minutes before Carson was able to get out. According to Rodriguez, as he entered the elevator of another building he was visiting on the tour, he jokingly asked if they had the service key for it.
