Bob Costas Urges Biden to Drop Out of Presidential Race: ‘We Can No Longer Indulge His Delusions’

Legendary sports broadcaster Bob Costas believes President Joe Biden should exit the 2024 presidential race, citing his “serious decline” over the years.

Costas is among a growing list of high-profile figures calling on the president to drop out following his performance in the debate against former President Donald Trump. Among that list is George Clooney and Charles Barkley.

For Costas, however, the opinion isn’t new. During an appearance on CNN’s Smerconish on Saturday morning — hours before the attempted assassination of Trump — a February clip was played showing Costas insisting that another Democrat should take Biden’s place. Now, as Costas explained Saturday, that feeling has only grown stronger.

“That one atrocious night was simply writ large what could be seen for years and years that he is in serious decline,” Costas told host Michael Smerconish. “Nobody should be president when they’re 85 or 86 — including the ghost of Abraham Lincoln — but this guy is clearly in decline at this point. And part of the job, leaving aside whether he can do it for the next four years, is winning the job; and as you just laid out, that seems to be nearly impossible at this point.”

Costas added that Biden would have been remembered more fondly had he served just one term before stepping aside for another candidate in 2024.

“Now, we can no long indulge his delusions,” he continued. “It’s a shame. It’s kind of a Shakespearean tragedy — perhaps with him as King Lear and his wife as Lady Macbeth — but that’s all secondary now. Precedent doesn’t matter now. ‘Oh, he is the incumbent. He won all the votes in the primary because he had no opposition.’ These are desperate times, and they call for measures that are appropriate to the circumstances.”
