GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz Pitches Trump on Meadows ‘The Best Way I Know How’: On Fox News
As the search for someone who actually wants to be Donald Trump‘s new chief of staff plows on, at least one Republican congressman has learned that the best way to influence Trump is to do it on Fox News.
Trump’s announcement that current White House Chief of Staff John Kelly will depart within the next few weeks was quickly followed by a humiliating parade of people either reportedly or publicly not wanting the job.
But at least one member of the remaining shortlist, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC), has yet to publicly reject the post, and he got a boost Monday from fellow House Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
During an appearance on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, anchor Bill Hemmer asked Gaetz if he thinks Meadows will get the job, and Gaetz gushed over the possibility.
“I do, I think the president and Mark Meadows have a good relationship,” Gaetz said. “Mark spends a lot of time over at the White House already, so I think it would be pretty seamless, and it would be a really big mistake to bring someone in as Chief of Staff who’s a good manager, but who hasn’t lived the timeline, the facts, and the details the way Meadows has.”
Gaetz also predicted Meadows would help protect Trump from the Mueller investigation, telling Hemmer that “He will be able to deploy countermeasures to protect the institution of the presidency against what I believe is a very illegitimate attack from the left, and from elements in the FBI Department of Justice.”
It turns out Gaetz wasn’t necessarily speaking to Fox News’ entire audience, but rather, an audience of one. He later told Politico that he “I lobbied the president the best way I know how. I made the Meadows case on Fox News.”
If that’s the case, and this Meadows thing doesn’t work out, someone ought to get on the horn to Scott Baio. He’s used to being in charge, and could probably use the work.
