Rep. Jackie Speier Mocks Trump Claim Democrats Are Calling Him to Defect Over Shutdown: ‘In His Dreams’
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) made fun of President Donald Trump’s claims that Democrats have been calling him offering their support to help end the partial government shutdown on Tuesday during her appearance on CNN.
“No, I think maybe in his dreams he’s gotten phone calls from Democrats,” Spier told CNN’s John Berman. “There’s not a Democrat that I’m aware of, in the House, that would have called the President to say, ‘I want to work with you and I want this wall to go up.’ There’s not a Democrat that wants to see five billion dollars wasted.”
Spier said there is technology available for the U.S. to use on the U.S.-Mexico border that would work “much better” to help stop illegal immigration than a wall or steel slats.
When asked by Berman if she thinks Trump is making up his claim, Spier said she thinks he “makes a lot of things up” with this claim being the latest example.
At least one House Democrat has said they will vote for some funding to go towards a wall or barrier.
“I just want a really straight answer here: will you vote for any money for a steel barrier,” CNN’s Poppy Harlow asked freshman Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) last week.
“I mean, I will definitely, I don’t know if it’s steel, I will vote for some money for physical barriers,” Hill replied.
