Trump Again Claims He Doesn’t Know His Attorney General Weeks After Claiming He Knows His Attorney General
President Donald Trump tweeted out late Friday night that he doesn’t know his own acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker and hasn’t had “social contact.”
“Matthew G. Whitaker is a highly respected former U.S. Attorney from Iowa,” Trump wrote. “He was chosen by Jeff Sessions to be his Chief of Staff. I did not know Mr. Whitaker. Likewise, as Chief, I did not know Mr. Whitaker except primarily as he traveled with A.G. Sessions. No social contact…”
Then, in a second tweet he added: “Mr. Whitaker is very highly thought of by @SenJoniErnst, Senator @ChuckGrassley, Ambassador @TerryBranstad, Leonard Leo of Federalist Society, and many more. I feel certain he will make an outstanding Acting Attorney General!”
Trump’s also claimed to the press on Friday morning that he didn’t know Whitaker.
“I don’t know Matt Whitaker. Matt Whitaker worked for Jeff Sessions, and he was always extremely highly thought of, and he still is,” Trump said in the morning. “But I didn’t know Matt Whitaker. He worked for Attorney General Sessions.”
The problem is that despite his claims — now both to reporters and in a tweet — just last month Trump said during a phone interview that he DID know Whitaker.
“I can tell you Matt Whitaker is a great guy,” Trump said in October to Fox & Friends hosts. “I know Matt Whitaker.”
