President Donald Trump is set to deliver remarks to Republican members of Congress at The Greenbrier resort in Sulphur Springs, West Virginia starting at 12:30 p.m. EST.
The speech is part of a traditional retreat House and Senate lawmakers have with the president and vice president to focus on the party’s agenda for the new year. However, things did not go initially as planned this year as a train with numerous GOP lawmakers on it crashed into a truck in Virginia yesterday while on the way to the retreat.
While no Republican politicians or staffers were injured, one person did die in the accident, which happened over 100 miles from the West Virginia resort center. Two other individuals were seriously hurt.
As for the actual retreat, GOP lawmakers are slated to focus on how to keep the government running, as funding will soon dry up if nothing is passed. There are currently major disagreements among Republicans, particularly fiscally conservative and hawkish types, who are reluctant to vote for the more bipartisan solutions that would get the needed Democrat votes.
With congress already just a week away from government shutdown number two of the year, Republicans may catch the flake this time, as they continue to face consensus struggles from within their party.
