ABC’s Jonathan Karl Literally Can’t Believe What Ted Cruz is Telling Him About Being Above Politics
As part of This Week With George Stephanopoulos’ year-end review of 2013 “Game Changers,” ABC White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl sat down with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) at Tortilla Coast, the now-infamous D.C. restaurant where Cruz held one of his meetings amidst the government shutdown, and was quite visibly taken aback when Cruz told him that he was trying to stay out of the political fray.
“This is a city where it’s all politics, all the time,” Cruz said, “and I’m trying to do my best not to pay attention to the politics.”
“Really?” Karl asked, incredulous.
“I know that’s hard to believe, because no one in this town does that,” Cruz said. “This is a time for people to stand up and do the right thing.”
Cruz then doubled down on “the Democrats’ shutdown.” Karl again wasn’t having it. “Even John Boehner (R-OH) has said this was a Republican shutdown,” Karl said. “Come on. We’re a couple months away from this. The only reason this happened was because you insisted that Obamacare be defunded as a condition of defunding the government. If you took away that insistence, there would be no government shutdown. I mean, really.”
