Anderson Cooper on Calling Trump ‘Disgraceful’ at the Helsinki Summit: ‘It Just Popped Out’
On Wednesday night, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper appeared on The Late Show and was asked about his criticism of President Donald Trump at the Helsinki summit alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Within seconds of the press conference wrapping up on Monday, Cooper said the following:
“You have been watching perhaps one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president at a summit in front of a Russian leader truly that I’ve ever seen.”
Stephen Colbert brought up how he called Trump’s performance “disgraceful.”
“I said, ‘the most disgraceful performance by an American president on the world stage in my lifetime,'” Cooper corrected Colbert, causing the audience to erupt with applause.
“It just popped out,” Cooper said. “I’m not saying it proudly. I just popped out. It was the first thing I said as soon as the press conference was done, it just sort of popped out.”
“But you heard that he changed one of the words,” Colbert responded.
Cooper joked that it now “all makes sense.”
“So it’s not disgraceful; it’s graceful,” Colbert quipped.
“Yes, exactly,” Cooper chuckled. “He has the best words, as he told us during the campaign.”
Colbert then expressed his frustration how folks kept calling Trump’s press conference a “performance.”
“It’s not a performance. He is the president. He’s just disgraceful,” Colbert said. “If it’s a performance, it’s even worse.”
Cooper acknowledged that he had a point. And then he revealed that Andy Cohen had asked Cooper while he was in Helsinki via text about “how hot” the guys were there.
