Anderson Cooper: Trump’s New Version of Russian Meddling ‘Doesn’t Exactly Square With Reality’
CNN’s Anderson Cooper opened tonight by asking what could have possibly changed in the span of a week to get President Donald Trump suddenly believing that Russia is trying to meddle in U.S. elections.
After avoiding standing by the intel community assessment while next to Vladimir Putin last week, Trump today tweeted that Russia is meddling to help the Democrats:
I’m very concerned that Russia will be fighting very hard to have an impact on the upcoming Election. Based on the fact that no President has been tougher on Russia than me, they will be pushing very hard for the Democrats. They definitely don’t want Trump!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 24, 2018
Cooper said, “His version of Russian interference doesn’t exactly square with reality.”
He pointed to Trump’s comments last week and wondered exactly what changed to make Trump think “they suddenly want the Democrats.”
Cooper also noted the lack of details about the Trump-Putin meeting and the few comments from the White House on the topic to date.
