Andrew Gillum Compares Ron DeSantis, Trump to Pigs: ‘They Can Survive Getting Dirty… I Can’t’
On Monday, Trevor Noah sat down with Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum and spoke about his opponent Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL).
Gillum insisted that race has been an issue in this campaign from the beginning not because of him, pointing to DeSantis’ remarks urging voters not to “monkey” Florida up and accused his Republican rival of giving “too much harbor” to racists, xenophobes, and anti-Semites.
The Daily Show host then invoked President Donald Trump‘s recent attack against the Tallahassee mayor and asked how he has the “ability” to “speak to the aspirations” and “call somebody out” at once.
“My grandmother use to have this saying, ‘Never, ever, ever wrestle with pigs’ because she said ‘you both get dirty, but the pig actually likes it,'” the Democratic candidate told Noah. “And that was important to me because what I realize is DeSantis and Trump want to do is drag me into the gutter with them, right? Because they could survive getting dirty. I can’t survive getting dirty because what they want to do is have me fit a stereotype I have to be cool and collected and precise. Now I’m defensive, but also have the ability to land a punch when it’s necessary.”
