‘Are They Living in an Alternate Universe?’: CNN’s Baldwin and Stelter Slam Fox’s Comey Coverage

Even Congressional Republicans are talking impeachment following the bombshell New York Times report about President Donald Trump allegedly asking fired FBI Director James Comey to close the Bureau’s probe on former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn.

But, for the most part, Fox News has downplayed the reported Comey memo. Jesse Watters called it “a boring scandal.” And as our Managing Editor Colby Hall noted, the word “impeachment” has been used about Fox far less frequently than it has on CNN and MSNBC.

CNN’s Brooke Baldwin posed this question to CNN media analyst Brian Stelter about the Fox News coverage.

“Are they living in an alternate universe?”

Stelter’s reply?

“The short answer is yes — an alternate reality right now.”

He added, “The message from a number of conservative news outlets has been ‘This is not a big deal. This is not a scandal. Don’t worry.'”

Stelter is not accusing Fox of ignoring the scandal. But he certainly believes they have attempted to minimize it.

“I don’t want to paint with an entirely too broad of a brush,” Stelter said. “Certainly Fox has been covering this story. Its news side has been covering this story. But it’s been downplayed. It’s about proportionality in some ways, Brooke. There’s been an attempt to say this is not a giant problem for the President.”

CORRECTION: A previous version of this post mis-quoted a line from Stelter. He did not say “they’re not in reality,” but rather “an alternate reality.” This post has been updated to reflect.
