Bill Clinton sat down with Piers Morgan for a full hour on CNN, and one of the topics the former president addressed was political polarization. He lamented how Fox News and MSNBC have played to the “extreme,” and got in a wry dig at CNN for becoming “more entertaining” in recent years.
Clinton admitted he was worried about CNN losing too many viewers, though Morgan interrupted to say, “No fear of that, Mr. President. Storming ahead.” Clinton said, “Yeah, you’re doing better, but you’re more entertaining now.” He smiled a bit and admitted that at least the network did so “without becoming more extreme.”
He lamented how people only go for the media outlets these days that they agree with, noting how MSNBC has seen ratings growth (at which point Morgan interrupted with a brief, awkward joke) and Fox News has done so well because “psychologically and substantively,” they’ve both managed to create niches that are “polarizing the country.”
