MSNBC host Martin Bashir dug into the story of a bridge in Washington state which collapsed overnight after being struck by an oversized truck. In an interview with Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT), Bashir noted that this bridge had been flagged as being “structurally deficient” and in need of repairs for some time. He pinned the blame for the bridge’s collapse on the Republican Party in Congress which has balked at passing new infrastructure spending bills.
“Congressman, I’m sorry, but this is not a surprise,” Bashir began. “This is what you get, is it not, when you have one party in Washington with nothing on the agenda except destroying government and never spending a cent on things that are essential.”
Welch agreed and added that sequester cuts take federal funding away from infrastructure repair work.
“How many more bridges have to collapse before you and your counterparts get together in Washington and actually do something about this problem?” Bashir shot back at Welch.
Welch concluded by saying that Congressional Republicans appeal only to “austerity” to address the nation’s fiscal ills, and said that fiscal conservatism is a “path to bridges not only crumbling but falling down.”
