Host Chuck Todd asked Carson if a president’s faith should matter to voters. “It depends on what that faith is,” Carson said. “If it’s inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the Constitution, no problem.”
“So do you believe Islam is consistent with the Constitution?” asked Todd.
“No, I do not,” Carson responded. “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.”
Carson was more open to the idea of Muslim members of Congress, telling Todd that it would depend on the individual Muslim. He also defended President Barack Obama from the rumor that he was a secret Muslim.
