Independent Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential runner-up Bernie Sanders is known and loved for his blunt style, which was on display during his Friday morning interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. After making a bit of news by saying he would indeed vote for Hillary Clinton in November, if for no other reason than to stop Donald Trump, Morning Joe regular Steve Rattner asked Sanders what he might do differently than Trump when it comes to companies like Carrier leaving the United States. Sanders’ answer sounded familiar to Rattner, an observation that Sanders wasn’t at all impressed by:
Sanders: I think you need to develop a trade policy that says if you want to shut down in America, you want to pay people $3 an hour in Mexico, you’re not going to bring your products back to this country tariff free…
Rattner: Isn’t that what Donald Trump says?
Sanders: So what!?! It’s not a new idea.
Rattner: I’m just asking.
For the record, though, there is a world of difference between saying “you’re not going to bring your products back to this country tariff free,” and calling for a 45% tariff, which is what Trump has proposed.
