Bill Clinton Inaccurately Tells Crowd Hillary Is Only Suffering From the Flu
Former president Bill Clinton assured a Las Vegas rally Wednesday that his wife Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was healing from her recent ill health and was ready to hit the campaign trail, but seemed to not remember which illness she was actually suffering from.
“I just talked to her, she’s feeling great,” Clinton told the crowd. “She’ll be back out there tomorrow.”
“It’s a crazy time we live in, you know, when people think there’s something unusual about getting the flu,” he continued. “Last time I checked, millions of people were getting it every year.”
The flu is indeed very common, but Clinton is actually suffering from pneumonia. Pneumonia is rarer and more serious than the flu, killing around five million people worldwide every year compared to around half a million for the flu. They aren’t even really the same category of disease; pneumonia is most commonly caused by bacterial infection, while the flu is a virus.
Bill’s spokespeople were very quick to correct the record, reaching out to reporters and clarifying what he meant.
Spokesman says WJC meant pneumonia when he said the flu. Flu just happens to sound less bad than pneumonia. https://t.co/YEAupuuVqC
