Former President Bill Clinton addressed the big question about his family’s wealth on Meet the Press today, given Hillary Clinton‘s recent comments about their wealth and how they’re not “truly well off.” The former president said the statement is “factually true” and touted how much of an advocate his wife has been for the middle class.
David Gregory challenged Clinton on the optics of a former first lady downplaying how well-off their family is. Clinton said for years she was pushing for things like legal assistance for poor people and paid leave for pregnant mothers in the 1970s.
And so, to him, the Clintons’ wealth is the “wrong debate” to have, because it distracts from the issue of the rocky economy. Clinton claimed he quite possibly had the lowest possible net worth of any president in the 20th century upon taking office. He concluded, “If you’ve been fortunate enough to be successful, are you now out-of-touch and insensitive to the agonizing struggles other people are facing? That’s the real issue.”
