Bill Maher: Democrats Should Resist the Temptation to Go With a Celebrity Candidate in 2020
Bill Maher last night ended his show with some advice to Democrats not to embrace a celebrity candidate as the best option to take down Donald Trump in 2020.
Some liberals have talked about the idea of getting a “star” to run against Trump and inspire people, but Maher isn’t sure that’s a good idea.
He mentioned a few celebrities by name, including Oprah Winfrey and The Rock, and even noted the current liberal activist buzz surrounding Michael Avenatti.
The reason Trump won, Maher argued, was that people decided on “which candidate will give us the most laughs.”
“But when the prime directive for government,” he continued, “goes from ‘keep us safe’ to ‘keep us entertained,’ that’s bread and circuses, end of the empire stuff.”
Maher argued that, despite one of the knocks on Barack Obama in 2008, the Democrats haven’t been as celebrity-enthused as the GOP:
“Republicans elect a celebrity who becomes a politician. Democrats at their best elect a politician who’s so good at public service, they become a celebrity.”
